Tips for Women

As a professional headshot photographer, my goal is to ensure that everyone I photograph looks their absolute best.

Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you in a professional setting. Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, preparing for a job interview, or creating a personal brand, a high-quality headshot plays a crucial role in how you're perceived.

A great headshot showcases your professionalism, confidence, and personality, helping you stand out in a crowded marketplace, this guide is designed to give you expert tips on how to prepare for your headshot session and ensure you look your best, from skincare and attire to posing and expression, every detail matters in creating a photo that truly represents you.

By following these tips, you’ll be ready to take a polished and professional headshot that highlights your unique qualities and leaves a lasting impression.

Let’s dive into the steps that will help you achieve the perfect headshot!

Outfits & Wardrobe

One of the most frequent questions clients ask me is, “What should I wear for my headshot session?” To simplify this decision, I’ve put together a list of outfit recommendations. Let’s dive into the styles that photograph best and those to avoid for a polished, professional, and flattering look.

Choosing the right outfit is crucial for a professional headshot, as it ensures the focus stays on your face. Here are my top recommendations:

  • Solid Color Tops: Avoid extensive patterns or decorations, as they can distract from your face. Solid colors draw attention to your features, which is the goal of a headshot.
  • Well-Fitted & Tailored Clothes: Loose or baggy clothing can make you look larger or less polished. Opt for tailored tops that fit well and convey a professional appearance. Avoid tops that sit too slouchy or oversized.
  • Avoid Low-Cut Tops: Since headshots are framed halfway into the chest, low-cut tops can pull attention away from your face. Stick to higher necklines for a clean, professional look.
  • Long Sleeves are Flattering: Short sleeves can misbehave by sitting awkwardly on the arms unless perfectly ironed. They also expose skin at the edges of the photo, which might distract from your face.
  • Choose Proper Undergarments: Ensure bra straps are hidden and not visible, as exposed straps appear unprofessional in headshots.
  • Avoid Transparent Tops: Try on your outfit beforehand to ensure it isn’t see-through. If you’re wearing a transparent top, layer it with a blazer or an additional piece to maintain a polished look.
  • Vibrant Colors Stand Out: Vibrant tones can make your headshot pop and reflect energy, depending on your profession.
  • Darker Tops Are Timeless: Dark colors like navy are particularly flattering in photos. While black is classic, navy and other darker hues often photograph better.
  • Avoid Tops That Blend with Hair or Skin Color: Dark clothes can blend into dark hair, while pale tops can wash out lighter skin tones. If this is a concern, layering can help create balance.
  • Keep Jewelry Minimal: Jewelry can divert attention away from your face. For a timeless, clean look, avoid wearing any jewelry during your session.

Hairstyles

Your hairstyle plays a significant role in your headshot, and how you prepare can make all the difference.

Here are some tried-and-true hair tips for women’s headshots based on my experience:

  • Flyaway Hair: Most flyaways can be tamed with hairspray, which I have available in my studio. Don’t worry about static or stray hairs—my professional retouching will take care of any stubborn ones.
  • Haircut and Color Timing: If you’re getting a haircut or color, schedule it about a week before your session. This allows your hair to settle into a natural look, avoiding a “freshly done” appearance.
  • Natural Look: Whether you style your hair yourself or work with a professional, stick to a hairstyle you’re comfortable with. Avoid trying something completely new on the day of your session. You want to look like the best version of yourself, but still recognizable.
  • Hair Up: Pulling your hair back can slim your face and neck, giving a clean, professional look. This also ensures your face is fully visible and becomes the focal point of the photo.
  • Curls: Subtle curls can add volume and elegance to your look. However, avoid going overboard—your headshot should still resemble your everyday appearance.
  • Blowout: If you opt for a blowout, schedule it for the same day as your session. Please note: while I don’t offer blowouts in my studio, I can enhance your blowout look once you’re here.
  • Clean Hair: If you’re not getting a blowout, wash your hair the day before your session. Use anti-frizz products to keep your hair smooth, whether you style it yourself or work with my stylist.

Makeup

Makeup can make or break your professional headshot, so it’s essential to approach it thoughtfully.

I recommend a natural look that enhances your features without overpowering them, allowing you to look like the best version of yourself.

Here are some makeup tips to help you look polished and professional for your headshot session:

  • Natural & Comfortable Feel: Your makeup should feel natural and look comfortable when you see yourself in the mirror. Choose colors that complement your natural complexion to avoid makeup becoming a distraction. I lean toward a subtle, natural look, but it’s ultimately about what makes you feel confident.
  • Avoid Highlighters: Highlighting and contouring can be tricky, and improper application may create unwanted shine in your photos. I recommend skipping highlighters for your headshot session to avoid reflective areas.
  • Prepare Before Your Session: If you’ve opted for professional makeup services in our studio, avoid applying any products, including sunscreen, on your face beforehand. Instead, use an oil-free moisturizer and eye cream for a clean and hydrated base.
  • Go Easy on the Powder: My high-resolution cameras capture every detail, including excessive powder. Too much powder can make your skin look dull or textured.
  • Hire a Professional Makeup Artist: Even if you’re skilled with your own makeup, hiring a professional who understands how makeup translates on camera can make a significant difference. Their expertise ensures your features are enhanced in a way that works perfectly for photography.

Skincare

When preparing for a headshot photo shoot, prioritizing skin care is essential.

In the week leading up to your session, focus on maintaining a good skincare routine, staying hydrated, and getting plenty of rest to ensure your skin looks fresh and healthy.

By following these tips, your headshot will look polished and professional, showcasing your best self.

Here are my top skin and beauty tips to help you look your best:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the week leading up to your session. Hydration keeps your skin plump and glowing while reducing dryness or dullness. Avoid sugary or carbonated drinks, as they can dehydrate you and affect your skin’s appearance.
  • Wax in Advance: If you plan to wax facial areas (e.g., eyebrows), schedule the appointment at least a week before your headshot. Waxing can leave skin sensitive or red for several days, so avoid doing it the day before or on the day of your shoot.
  • Treat Yourself to a Facial: A facial can help your skin look smooth and refreshed, but timing is crucial. Schedule it at least a week before your session to allow your skin time to recover from any potential reactions to the products.
  • Exfoliate: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and radiant. However, do this a few days before your session to prevent redness or irritation.
  • Moisturize: Pamper your skin with plenty of moisturizer in the days leading up to your headshot. Consistent hydration keeps your skin looking supple and glowing. Consider using a moisturizing mask, for an extra boost of hydration.
  • Get Plenty of Rest: Looking rested is key to a confident and energized headshot. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before your shoot to ensure you look fresh and alert.

Preparing for your headshot may seem like a lot of work, but with these tips, you'll be fully equipped to look your best.
